Another amazing voice

Here is a song by Niyaz, "In The Shadow of Life" and the vocals by Azam Ali, an American Iranian. I generally do not like music with Arab overtones as it mostly sounds like one fat "kak en kerm" (Afrikaans for "moan and groan") session. It is a irritating mixture of wailing and nagging sounds where the remnants of the last sand storm are blown and excreted through trumpet like nasal passages. The typical high pitched "tjanking" (Afrikaans for "howling") can only be appreciated by Arabs and not my tone deaf aging ear drums. But this song is indeed different and certainly worth listening to.

The track with an English title, “In the Shadow of Life”, is sung in a foreign tongue despite the song name. This fact seems unimportant as the deeper meanings implied are clearly evoked by the nature of the performances. Niyaz expresses spiritual aspirations through its music and the numinous quality of the material suggests the importance of personal introspection.

Reflections on the sound of music

There is nothing quite as powerful as the music of Pink Floyd to take you on a journey of inner reflection. Their music strum cords and resonates deep within my few remaining brain cells. For me at least, it is uplifting, powerful sounds and it never fails to elevate one's spirit. No wonder they are the world's greatest band of all time. Tonight, just what the doctor called for. Besides my desire to sail the world, my second biggest wish is that I get the chance to be at one of their live shows! Man, that will be something! Sadly, there will most likely never be a live show ever again.

Okna Tsahan Zam now playing

OknaTsahanZam

Here comes the CD by Okna Tsahan Zam, the charismatic Kalmyk throat singer. Produced and arranged by Claude Samard, this album is presented in a beautiful digipack with a richly illustrated booklet and a 16 bonus DVD with film footage of the steppe and the video clip of Edjin Duun. Conceived as a journey through the steppe, it features musical sequences set in a movie-like fashion to render the universe of the steppe. Melodic songs sustained by electronic touches alternate with roots pieces (on vocals and dombra). Okna Tsahan Zam is also featured solo on three tracks devoted to throat singing. Electronic contributions naturally reinforce the trance aspect of shamanic music. Traditional instruments are played by Kalmuk and Mongol musicians, and the additional sounds of nature connecting the songs (wind, thunder, wolves, horses) were recorded on the spot, in order to create an authentic sound universe in harmony with the cosmic dimension of the steppe. Only playing four songs here;

Okna Tsahan Zam - Shaman Voices - Edjin Duun
Okna Tsahan Zam - Shaman Voices - Sibir
Okna Tsahan Zam - Shaman Voices - Khoomei
Okna Tsahan Zam - Shaman Voices - Djangar

Listening to Mari Boine

I have no clue what the hell she is singing about! At moments it sounds like the ebb and flow of sexual moaning ... in the heat of the moment if you get my drift. None the less, I wish I had such a pure sounding voice. If I did, I surely would not be talking shit here on this website, I'll be using my voice to make a couple of million dollars! In the words of my friend Martin, I will then plant my balls in the sand of some remote beach and do fuck all but sit there all day long, every day - and you will have to make an appointment to talk to me. Despite me talking kak (shit) here, I kinda like the sound of this song.

Mari Boine, previously known as Mari Boine Persen, née Mari Boine Olsen is a Norwegian Sami musician known for having added jazz and rock to the yoiks of her native people. The language Mari Boine sings in is Sami, of course. She originates from a village called Gámehisnjárga (Sami for 'The Border') a name that is very fitting for describing her music. She exists on the border, musically, without crossing it. She seems to live in The Independent State of the Border, which is to say, where Mari Boine is, nobody else are. So, no, she is not Mari Boine, the Sami artist. She is Mari Boine, the artist.

Strong voice with a mythical and ancient undertone

I just stumbled onto this video from "Eivør Pálsdóttir" singing her song "Trøllabundin". She has a remarkable strong voice with mythical and ancient undertones. It almost feels like this would be the type of ritual music my ancient forebears would have listened too.

I like it ... Eivør Pálsdóttir - Trøllabundin

Distant Lands

Distant lands, strange voices, other places and interesting people. Listening to some songs tonight and we yet again realized how much we enjoy traveling the world. Meeting new and strange people who think and do things differently. The opportunity to visit their lands and learning their culture. To mingle with them, taste their food and listen to their music. To feel compassion and have a deep empathy with their dreams and struggles. To hear their dreams and visions, feel their joys and pains in our hearts and to re-discover that we are essentially all the same. These songs bring back many memories and motivates us to continue our travels. Tonight our thoughts are with the Syrian people who are having a hard time and which is bound to soon get even worse. Our thoughts and prayers!
